The Primus speaker cable is based on solid-core silver plated copper conductors of varying sizes in a TRUE Hyperlitz design. We go one step further and create an internally bi-wired cable in a design that is almost like an externally bi-wired cable. We don’t stop there and make sure each solid core conductor has its very own Teflon cover. Why? Because this design is what makes it a TRUE Hyperlitz design and it also almost completely eliminated inter-conductor EMI. This is important because elimination of inter-conductor EMI accounts to a significant degree for the open, neutral and ultimately “natural” sound of the Primus speaker cable. The Primus speaker cable is therefore almost like having two separate speaker cables in one: One for the mids and highs and another for the lower octaves. That is what a true bi-wired design should be. It should totally separate the frequencies going to the midrange and tweeter from those going to the woofers. With the Primus speaker cable we accomplish this task by making sure that none of the solid-core silver plated copper conductors touch each other throughout the entire length of the speaker cable. In other words, the wires that are conducting the signal going to the midrange and the tweeter are physically separated from those transferring the signal to the woofers through the use of heavy Teflon coating for each solid-core wire. In fact, the two separate sets of wires only share the amplifier’s binding post and nothing else. This is almost like an externally biwired cable design but in a single package, meaning instead of having two separate speaker cables for each speaker, the Primus accomplishes the same task using one speaker cable per speaker. Of course, in situations where bi-wiring is not required, the Primus can be single-wired.
The reason that we are able to accomplish these different variations with the Primus speaker cable is because the cable is made of so many different gauges of Teflon coated, solid-core, silver-plated copper conductors. In fact, in a bi-wired arrangement, the midrange and tweeter “positive” lead is made of 8 different solid-core wires: four of them are Teflon coated, 18 awg heavily silver-plated copper conductors and four are Teflon coated, 22 awg conductors. The midrange and tweeter’s “negative” lead also has 8 conductors whose total thickness is equivalent to a single 11 awg solid core wire. That’s enough wire thickness to conduct the full spectrum of the sound wavelengths with minimal loss of signal. The woofer’s “positive” lead is made up of four 16 awg Teflon coated, heavily silver plated copper conductors for a total thickness of about 10 awg. The woofer’s “negative” lead gets the same complement of four 16 awg Teflon coated conductors as the positive lead. As a result of having such a generously thick cable, once again, minimal loss of signal occurs while preserving the entire range of frequencies that were meant to be conducted. The fact that the Primus speaker cable can accommodate four 16 awg wires for each lead of the woofer section means that bass definition, visceral impact and “naturalness” stands in a league occupied by few other cables.
Furthermore, as with all our products, each single wire that makes the Primus speaker cable is treated in liquid nitrogen. Our cryogenic treatment is second to none and consists of at least 5 straight days of deep liquid nitrogen immersion for all the wires prior to assembly.
In the tradition of simplicity, we also use silver banana plugs and silver spades that can accommodate 1/4” and 3/8” binding posts. As I have mentioned before, I have never understood the rational of going through the expense of building a silver based cable and using gold plated banana plugs and spades. The fact is that different metals conduct at different speeds. Therefore, using spades and banana plugs that are made of a different metal than the wires of a speaker cable introduces unnecessary and totally avoidable coloration. I should also mention that all of our spades and banana plugs receive the same deep immersion liquid nitrogen treatment prior to assembly.
We also use crimping for our spades and WBT 4% silver solder for the banana plugs. Prior to crimping or soldering, all contact points of the metals are cleaned with Caig’s Lab pro gold GXL metal conditioner and deoxidizer.
